Places and sites to visit in Le Mans and its surroundings

Le Mans is a small city that is famous for its car races (the famous “24 heures du Mans”, recently at the heart of the film Ford v. Ferrari) and for its well-preserved medieval and Renaissance city centre, the Cité Plantagenêt.

The city is surrounded by typical small villages and other iconic buildings and historical sites that reflect the rich history of the region:

  • the Abbaye de l'Epau (accessible via the tramway from the city centre), a Cistercian abbey that welcomes various artistic exhibitions;
  • the villages of Sainte Suzanne (Mayenne) or Saint-Céneri-le-Gerei (Orne);
  • one hour and a half’s drive will take you to the D-Day beaches and the American cemetery of the Normandy WW2 war sites;
  • driving south, you will find the Loire Valley castles and the beautiful city of Tours, also famous for its Renaissance centre.

Here is the website of the city of Le Mans.
